Social Security Number

As an F-1 student, you are eligible for a Social Security Number once you have an offer letter for paid employment. To obtain a Social Security Number, you must call to make an appointment before going to the Social Security Administration (SSA) Card Center located in Minneapolis.

We encourage you to memorize your Social Security Number and to keep your Social Security card with other important documents, such as your I-20 and passport. Do not carry your Social Security card in your wallet.

You will receive your Social Security card in the mail in approximately two weeks.
