Social Security Number

As an F-1 student, you are eligible for a social security number once you have an offer letter for paid employment. Be sure to memorize your social security number and keep your social security card with your other important documents such as your I-20 and passport. Do not carry your social security card in your wallet.

You will receive your social security card in the mail within approximately two weeks. (Due to COVID-19 protocols at the SSN office, allow six weeks to receive your paper SSN card.)

On-Campus Jobs:
Place a letter request for a "Social Security Letter" in the ISS Portal by clicking on the Letter Request Form.

What to take to the Social Security Administration (SSA) office:
  • Completed Social Security Letter
  • Form I-20
  • Valid passport
  • Valid I-94 card
  • One other piece of identification such as student ID, driver’s license, state ID, etc.
  • Form SS-5 "Application for a Social Security Card" (complete online or at the SSA office)
You will receive your social security card in the mail. Once you receive your social security card, take it to the Human Resources (HR) office to complete paperwork. You may not begin working until your card has been received by HR.
