Transfer Out Request

Student Eligibility:
  • The new school's acceptance letter is required to request a transfer of the SEVIS record.
  • If a student completes a course of study (or OPT), the student is eligible to transfer through the end of the 60-day grace period.
  • A transfer student must start attending classes within 5 months of the last day he or she attended classes at the transfer-out school or the next available session, whichever comes sooner.
    • Students eligible for summer vacation do not need to study in summer but must start attending classes within 5 months of the last day he or she attended classes at the transfer-out school.
  • F-1 students are permitted to stay in the US when transferring as long as classes at the transfer-in school begin within 5 months of transferring out of the current school or within 5 months of the program completion date on the Form I-20, whichever is earlier.
  • OPT students:
    • If a student completes a course of study (or OPT), the student is eligible to transfer through the end of the 60-day grace period.
    • Students must begin classes within five months of ending a period of authorized OPT.
      • The student must be able resume classes at the transfer-in school within 5 months of the transfer release date set by the school that recommended OPT, or the date the OPT authorization ends, whichever is earlier.
    • The authorization for OPT ends on the transfer release date, and you must stop your training opportunity at that time. Authorization for OPT is not transferable to your new school. If you are on OPT, you should choose a transfer release date after your OPT ends.
    • Students can request to transfer up until the end of the 60-day period following post-completion OPT, as long as the transfer release date will occur within five months or at the start of the next available session, whichever is sooner.
